All students at St. Joseph Academy are required to participate in PE class unless excused by a written note from a parent or doctor. The purpose of the Physical Education class is to develop physical fitness, motor skills, social skills, and sportsmanship. The P3 (three year olds) attend PE class for 30 minutes, every other week. The kindergarten through the eighth grade participates 45 minutes per week. Students in the fourth through the eight grades must wear appropriate gym clothes. All students participate in Field Day at the end of the school year.
Preschool (P3 and P4), Kindergarten and 1st Grade
The PE program for Preschool through the first grade is designed for the motor development of the children. The program also includes spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, balance and rhythm. Students receive instruction in age appropriate organized games. A wide variety of equipment is used in working in these areas.
2nd and 3rd Grade
PE at the 2nd and 3rd grade level adds more sports related activities and games at a beginning level, both team and individual sports. Students use these skills in various modified activities. Students begin to run longer distances to get a more rigorous workout.
4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Grade
PE with the fourth through the eighth grade continues to work toward skill development in various sports activities. Various cooperative, individual, and team sports are used to improve skills of the students.
