The 5th graders learned about vermicomposting (worm composting) and created a composting bin for the classroom. They started with two plastic bins nestled inside one another then added shredded newspaper (bedding), eggshells, water, and worms of course! They will care for the worms as class pets while learning how to compost and helping the environment. They will water the worms when needed and add “brown stuff” like cardboard, paper, and dry plant materials for Carbon and add “green stuff” like fruit and vegetable scraps (no onions, please!) for Nitrogen. Water, air, Carbon, and Nitrogen are essential to composting.
